![]() Get revenge against Nucky Thompson (both failed). ![]() I will continue to watch this show, but I am disappointed by the laziness and thoughtlessness of its writers this week. Evil-doer Full Name James Darmody Alias Jimmy Origin Boardwalk Empire Occupation Bootlegger Powers / Skills Charisma Intelligence Hand-to-hand combat Hobby Spending time with his wife and son. The specifics there have a lot to do with the controversy over Tara’s death on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” but the same cliche visited on that fan base has been visited on those of “Boardwalk Empire.” I can’t lay out the situation any clearer than it was done at this site: It’s the same reason Shirley MacLaine’s character had to die at the end of “The Children’s Hour.” It’s the same reason Sandy Dennis died in “The Fox.” It’s why Tara on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” was shot dead and why Tara on “True Blood” was shot in the head just THIS SEASON. Oh, and there was that psychopath butcher coming for him, too.īut there’s a much more powerful reason that I believed Angela’s days were numbered. Also, this was happening at a time when Jimmy’s status as top man in Atlantic City appeared to be getting the better of him. If Angela is not married to Jimmy, what is her place in the show? This is a show about gangsters, not about painters. The entire episode was Freud’s Oedipus complex writ large: Jimmy slept with his mother and killed his father, promptly replacing Angela ‘s brutal murder as the show’s most disturbing development. ![]() Very recently, she and Jimmy had admitted to each other that they were not in love. There was ample reason to believe that the writers were done with Angela. I told my wife, but I guess nobody would take her word for it. I did not make that prediction, however, because I wanted to believe that it wasn’t true. Several minor and major characters met their untimely ends in the game-changing episode. I should have predicted the eventual victim of Manny’s wrath here on LeBlog last week. Jim Neary The second season finale, To the Lost, was a bloodbath. Horvitz makes sure that both women are dead, shooting each one extra time after both are already lying still in blood on the floor. He is genuinely surprised, but wastes little time in terrorizing and killing Angela despite her pleas for mercy. Instead, he has shot Angela’s new girlfriend. When it does, he shoots the figure that emerges. When he finds Jimmy’s wife Angela in the bed and the shower running, he takes her hostage and waits for the bathroom door to open. He chokes the location of the Darmody home out of bootlegger Mickey Doyle and creeps in during the middle of the night. He believes that Jimmy Darmody, who he’s been needling over a debt, was the architect of a failed attempt on his life. The character played by Aleksa Palladino is just the most recent victim.Īs I had predicted, Manny Horvitz (William Forsythe) descended on Atlantic City with blood on his mind. And it would be a cheat for us to say, ‘We want to keep our beloved character Jimmy Darmody alive.'”įor his part, Pitt shrugged off the rumors surrounding his behavior on set. ”I’m confident that I will be judged by my performance,” he told EW.com, “and not by the ‘he said, she said.I hope nobody was too surprised by what happened to Angela Darmody and her girlfriend Sunday night on the usually stellar “Boardwalk Empire.” If you were surprised, then you haven’t been paying attention to pop culture very carefully. You want to be honest about the storytelling… Anything short of Nucky wouldn’t feel real, it wouldn’t be real. If you take things to their logical extreme with the situation we created, Jimmy has betrayed Nucky, he tried to have him killed. Winter said the decision to kill off Jimmy was made “at the beginning of Season 2,” adding, “The idea was to try and push things to their absolute limit, even if it makes it difficult for yourself and your writing team. ![]() He’s intense, of course, but I don’t think you can do that job without being intense.” Exec producer Terrence Winter says it’s the latter, maintaining in an interview with EW.com that Pitt’s ouster was a creative decision. ![]()
